"Now You Are 18" Handbooks
A grant to the Houston Bar Association Auxiliary Charitable Fund enables the HBAA to distribute copies of the booklet, “Now You Are 18,” to high school seniors throughout Harris County. Prepared by the Texas Lawyers Auxiliary, the booklet explains the importance of knowing one’s legal rights and responsibilities. Topics covered include issues students are likely to encounter as they enter the “real” world, such as renting an apartment, credit and debt collection, employment, and buying a car. This year, the HBAA distributed 47,365 copies of the handbook to 35 schools and school districts.

Please contact Diane Lee, LeeDLL59@aol.com,  to assist with this project.

Will-A-Thon - Again this year, the Houston Bar Association through the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program is having a Will-A-Thon for low income seniors.  They will need witnesses on May 12, 2009 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.  The HBAA has helped with this rewarding event many times in the past and will continue to offer our support.

Please Email Lynn Gagnon at lgagnon738@aol.com if you would like to help.  The event takes place at the Third Ward Multi-Service Center.

Do the WRITE Thing - Sponsored by the National Campaign to Stop Violence and directed at 7th and 8th grade students, this Program requires students to write essays explaining how violence, gang activitiy and drugs affect their lives.  HBAA members read and "grade" between 2500 and 4000 of these essays each year.  Members can read as few or many as they are able to find time for. It is an enlightening and often tear jerking experience because the essays are written by Houston students!
