The Houston Bar Association Auxiliary (HBAA) began in 1947 as the Women’s Association to the Houston Bar Association with the vision of twelve women who were spouses of attorneys. The original purpose of the Auxiliary was to assist the HBA with social functions.

Since 1947, the Houston Bar Association Auxiliary has provided assistance with social and service projects for its members and HBA members. Through its Charitable Fund, the Auxiliary supports some of the service projects of the HBA, as well as its own projects that serve the community. The HBA Auxiliary presents the annual Leon Jaworski Award, which for over two decades has honored a member of the legal profession who has made outstanding contributions to the community at large, as well as the legal profession. The HBA Auxiliary has been recognized at the local, state and national level for its outstanding leadership and service.

In 1981, HBAA’s objectives were expanded to include community service projects focused on the law and the practice of law as a profession. The name was changed in 1990 to the Houston Bar Association Auxiliary to represent its diversified membership. Article I of the bylaws states: “Its object shall be to assist the Houston Bar Association and the Houston Young Lawyers Association, and the State Bar of Texas to promote a better understanding and relationship between the general public and the legal profession through community service projects and to encourage social relations among its members.”

In 1982, the Houston Bar Association Charitable Fund, Inc. was established to provide funding for charitable or educational projects benefiting the community. More information is available by clicking the Charitable Fund button on the left.

Today, the HBAA is involved in community service projects as well as social activities. Check back often for our latest newsletter.
