Dear Friends of the HBAA Charitable Fund Scholarship:
Welcome to 2012! Now that we have survived all the holiday gatherings, and are making our plans to attend the HBAA Cooking Classes in February, we are excited to tell you that it is time again for the HBAA Charitable Fund Non-Event. Last year’s event was very well received, and because of your generosity, scholarships were awarded to three (3) deserving students at South Texas College of Law, the University of Houston Law Center and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law. So, instead of inviting you to yet another event, we are once again extending a direct appeal to you, hoping you will appreciate the night off while still making an enormous difference in someone’s life. Therefore, we cordially and proudly invite you to join us in support of the Houston Bar Association Auxiliary Charitable Fund, Inc., Scholarship through your generous donation.
Each year, we invite qualified students entering their third year of law school at the three (3) Houston area law schools to apply for the $5,000.00 scholarship(s). The selection is based upon academic excellence, financial need and community involvement. Each of the categories is important in our selection. The past recipients have not only maintained outstanding grade point averages, but have also exhibited outstanding student leadership through mentoring others, volunteer work at legal clinics and active involvement in their communities. They are great examples of the ethical men and women who will bring pride to the future of the legal profession. We like to consider each of them a potential Jaworski Award winner.
The first HBAA Charitable Fund Scholarship was awarded in the spring of 2004, and since that time, we have awarded seventeen (17) additional scholarships for a total of $90,000.00. Funding these scholarships fulfills one of the most important purposes of the Auxiliary which is to support legal education. Our recipients have gone on to join prestigious law firms in Houston, Austin, Dallas, and Portland, Oregon; they have obtained judicial clerkships and served in the JAG Corps.
Now, as we prepare for our ninth year of the HBAA Charitable Fund Scholarship, we very much need your support to continue our goal of awarding one (1) $5,000.00 scholarship to a recipient at each of the three (3) Houston Law Schools. Your donation will qualify for a tax donation as the HBAA Charitable Fund is a 501(c)3 organization. You will be listed on the “Board of Honor” on display at the HBAA Spring President’s Luncheon and Market when the scholarships are awarded, and you will be recognized in our Newsletter and Directory. If you, or your law firm, should choose to completely fund one (1) of the scholarships, the awarding of the scholarship will be announced and publicized as “presented through the generosity of ¼. for 2012.” Won’t you please give generously? Your gift will not only help these students towards attaining their degree goal, but will also help bring the best and brightest to the legal profession.
